US HRC Steel

Source: CRU / American Metal Market
··· $/t
···
BUY <700 SELL >1,450

US benchmark for hot-rolled coil steel — the raw material behind construction, autos, appliances and industrial equipment. Steel is a classic late-cycle indicator: mills ramp up capacity only after demand is already strong, then overbuild into the downturn.

How to Read US HRC Steel as a Cycle Signal

A capital-intensive, slow-to-adjust industry

Steelmaking requires blast furnaces and mills that take years to build and cannot be idled cheaply. When construction and auto demand surge, mills run flat out and prices spike because new capacity cannot arrive in time. When demand rolls over, producers keep running below break-even rather than shut down, so gluts build slowly and prices grind lower for longer than most investors expect.

Tied directly to construction and auto cycles

Steel demand tracks two of the most cyclical parts of the economy: residential/commercial construction and vehicle production. Both are highly sensitive to interest rates, so steel prices tend to move with the same credit cycle that drives housing starts and car sales — making steel a useful cross-check against those signals rather than an independent one.

Reading the signal

A steel price falling toward the buy threshold usually coincides with a construction slowdown that has already hurt steelmaker earnings and share prices — the classic trough-buying setup. A price pushing into the sell zone typically means mills are running near capacity and pricing power is at its cyclical peak, which historically has not persisted for long.
