The seaborne benchmark price for iron ore delivered to China — the essential raw material for steelmaking, and one of the most China-demand-sensitive commodities tracked here, since China buys roughly 70% of the world's seaborne iron ore.

How to Read Iron Ore Price as a Cycle Signal

A China infrastructure and property proxy

Because Chinese steel mills consume such a large share of global seaborne iron ore, the price is unusually exposed to Chinese construction and infrastructure spending specifically, more than global industrial activity broadly. A slowdown in Chinese property construction has historically hit iron ore before it shows up in broader industrial metals.

Concentrated supply, elastic-ish demand

Unlike copper, the bulk of global iron ore supply comes from a small number of very low-cost mines in Australia and Brazil, which can profitably keep producing even at low prices. That makes the supply side less prone to shutting in during downturns than higher-cost commodities, so price swings are driven more by demand-side shifts in Chinese steel output than by supply shocks.

Reading the signal

A price near the buy threshold typically coincides with a Chinese construction slowdown severe enough to have already depressed miner earnings and share prices. A price in the sell zone typically reflects strong Chinese steel output running against a supply base that, while low-cost, still cannot expand instantly — historically the point at which miner profitability, and share prices, have peaked for the cycle.
