NBSK Pulp Price

Source: FOEX / PIX Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft index
··· $/t

BUY <750 SELL >1,300

The benchmark price for Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft pulp — the wood-fibre input for printing paper, tissue and packaging. Demand has structurally declined with print media, but packaging and tissue demand, plus a slow-to-adjust supply side, keep the price genuinely cyclical.

How to Read NBSK Pulp Price as a Cycle Signal

A structurally shrinking end-market, still cyclical

Digital media has permanently reduced demand for printing and writing paper, the traditional core end-use for NBSK pulp. That secular decline doesn't remove the cycle, though — packaging, tissue and specialty paper demand still swing with the broader economy, and the same slow-to-build mill economics seen in steel and copper apply here too.

Mill economics drive the overshoot

A new pulp mill costs well over a billion dollars and takes years to build, so producers cannot quickly add capacity when prices rise, and are reluctant to shut expensive mills when prices fall. That combination produces the same overshoot-in-both-directions pattern seen across the other industrial commodities tracked here, just on a smaller, less-followed market.

Reading the signal

A price near the buy threshold typically reflects a demand air-pocket that has already hurt pulp-producer earnings and share prices. A price in the sell zone typically reflects tight supply relative to packaging and tissue demand, historically the point at which producer margins — and share prices — have peaked before the next capacity addition or demand pullback.
