Aluminium Price

Source: London Metal Exchange
··· $/t
···
BUY <1,600 SELL >3,200

The LME benchmark for aluminium — the lightweight metal behind packaging, transport and construction, and increasingly EVs and renewable-energy infrastructure. Aluminium smelting is extremely energy-intensive, so the price is unusually sensitive to electricity costs on top of the usual industrial-demand cycle.

SELL: Aluminium Price rises above 3,200 $/t — exposed stocks priced for continued strength, reduce exposure
How to Read Aluminium Price as a Cycle Signal

An energy cost as much as a metal price

Smelting aluminium from alumina consumes enormous amounts of electricity — enough that energy costs are typically the single largest input for a smelter. Spikes in power prices (as seen in Europe during the 2021-2022 energy crisis) can force high-cost smelters to curtail production regardless of aluminium demand, adding a second, energy-driven swing factor on top of the usual industrial cycle.

A lightweighting and electrification tailwind, similar to copper

Like copper, aluminium has a structural demand tailwind from vehicle lightweighting (aluminium body panels reduce EV weight and extend range) and renewable-energy infrastructure. This raises the long-term demand floor without removing the cycle — aluminium fell sharply in every recent recession despite the structural story, the same pattern seen in copper.

Reading the signal

A price near the buy threshold typically reflects weak industrial demand combined with smelters that have not yet curtailed output — a squeeze on producer margins that has historically bottomed producer share prices. A price in the sell zone reflects strong demand or supply curtailments (energy-driven or otherwise) tightening the market, historically the point at which producer profitability peaks for the cycle.
